Curtain Poles Alive and Well

By Pablo Privetski

Once upon a time in the mystical and mysterious land of home improvement and interior design there lived a curtain pole. In fact there lived many curtain poles all with their own personality and unique design.

The curtain poles lived in times of trouble and persecution. The world was evolving around them and for a while they struggled to keep their finials above water. A society of fast food and video games had left the poor curtain poles and tracks behind.

Despite the harmony, hope had been lost by many in curtain pole village. The future looked grim and some had totally gone off the rails!

Now during this time, Queen Nikola reigned over all curtain poles. She had become angry as the world forced them into the shadows, into hiding and out of sight, forgotten. She decided the time was right to revolt, to lead the curtain poles in revolution and attempt to restore some pride and prestige. She also knew that preparation was the key so she set about planning the invasion in great detail. When the battle plan was complete and they were ready, she would march them against the world.

Many weapons were being made as the curtain pole battalion underwent their training. Walnut, pine and the finest oak were used to graft weapons from wood. Metal too was used, including brass, silver and chrome. The they applied the war paint in many different colours. They were a sight to behold!

An incredible atmosphere had enveloped curtain pole village, an atmosphere that was poles apart from the apathy that had been creeping in. The soldiers polished and added the finishing touches to their armour as they waited in anticipation of battle. An insignia was engraved into each soldiers helmet and shield, a mark that would make them unique amongst all other curtain poles. They would grace the battlefield and victory or defeat would at least be exquisite. Their couture appearance would be the envy of all other home accessories. The stars were shining brightly on this night, Orion smiled and granted them light and the army's grandeur was complete.

Knowing she would begin and lead the invasion herself, Queen Nikola summoned the huge army into her presence. Businesses and homes the world over would be invaded and taken over. From Havana to Hampshire, Belgravia to Basingstoke and from Los Angeles to Lincoln, every street, every avenue would see the march of the curtain poles.

Queen Nikola exclaimed at the top of her voice, Holdback! Holdback! Holdback! After all the planning and plotting she was determined to get the timing correct. It would be an awesome attack, from air, land and sea. Some of the stealth soldiers would even sneak into the monorail movement.

It was here! Attack, Attack, Attack! Moving with courage and skill the curtain poles invaded. The world didnt know what had hit them, although the curtain poles were full of mercy and casualties were minimal. Success was comprehensive, victory was astounding, and the job was done. Bearing the mark of defeat was every window and door in the land.

I am way too young of course to remember the battle for curtain pole hill but my grandparents told me many tales about it and there have been some wonderful movies and documentaries made on the subject. Oscar winning film, The Charge of the Telescopic Curtain Pole, starring Edward Rockingham and Sally Florentine was wonderful but my all time favourite has to be, Saving Private Finial. Dominic Galleria deserved all the plaudits he received for his role in that! - 15336
